I am in the process of getting C5691157 back on the road and Im to the point of making sure the car is mechanically sound before I paint it. The engine number in this car is 168. The reason I ask is I believe my car is number 182 and if Im correct, while the numbers are close, it isnt the original engine. A few things are affecting my decision. One, the engine does run fair but it was stuck when I got it and it took a lot of effort to make it run. I give it around a 30% chance that it straightens up and runs fine but I know from experience that wont always be the case. Another thing, I just happen to have a rebuilt low mileage 57 Lincoln premiere engine along with a new, correct 56 Mark II transmission that will bolt right in. If in fact, this number 168 engine thats in it, has a correct number that matches the car, then I dont have a problem pulling it out and freshening it up. Whatever happens afterward I plan on selling anything thats left over so its a matter of making sense to make use of all these parts I have on hand. Thanks!

From the chassis number 1157 you would expect the engine number to be 1157 - 982 = 175. But its not a completely hard and fast rule and so 168 sounds like it is (very) likely the original engine. There are detailed posts about this on the Forum so I'll leave to others to comment further.

you can see, that a difference of 989 is typical for early Mark II?s. I think, Mark is right and you have the original engine.

Holger and Mark are correct. 989 is within the acceptable range. Your car does have the original engine J

If you do end up having to rebuild the original engine then when I did mine a couple of years ago all the parts were available from EGGE Machine Company and Hagens Auto Parts. I believe only new camshafts are not available unless you happen to find an NOS one.

Be very careful if removing the steel water pipe fitting on the passenger side cylinder head ...as far as I can tell they are not available anywhere.
