MARKET: 1957 Lincoln Continental Mark II Two-Door Hardtop
BY KEITH MARTIN
JAN 24, 2008

RM Auctions: Wiseman Collection

Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Dec. 1, 2007

368-cid V8; four-barrel, auto. White with white-and-red leather. Largely original, with some repaint and touch-up work over chipped and scratched factory paint. Some discoloring visible on right front fender from older repairs. Decent chrome and trim, glass shows no problems, wide whitewalls in good shape. Leather appears original, with front seats very dry and more heavily worn than rears. Power options appear functional; carpet, door panels and headliner well preserved; dash and gauges still crisp. Engine compartment complete and shows wear commensurate with 30,000 claimed original miles. Originally leased by Dwight D. Eisenhower and used during his second term as president.

The Mark II debuted at the Paris show in October 1955. Its long hood, short deck and restrained use of chrome were all departures from other American upmarket vehicles at the time. And it was exclusive, priced near $10,000, in Rolls-Royce territory. Its 368-cid V8 produced 300 hp, and options such as power seats, power windows and air conditioning were available. This one was used by President Eisenhower at his Pennsylvania ranch before being owned for nearly 20 years by two Ford executives. These cars have not yet taken off in popularity with collectors; though the Eisenhower history is an interesting side note, it didn't account for much of a premium here.
