John has a '56 Mark II. But, I'm guessing he would take either the early (GEN 1) or the later (GEN 2) styles.

I didn't think there was a height difference on the manifold. Why the difference in the cap?

I have no idea why, but there definitely is!

The reason I brought that up is someone that has a '57 says he can't close his hood with the air cleaner on it and wondered if he got a '56 engine back from the rebuilder. I'll ask about his block number.

I've got one comimg from MKII Enterprises....$25.e.I already know when it arrives it wont work...over the winter I replaced my intake manifold gaskets and took off the valve pushrod cover just to take a peek under there and I found this home made thing. Thats the underside

I didn't know it at the time (but I do now) that the vent cap was a faucet strainer...lol
If you been following along for the past almost 3 years, Lots of surprises with this car for sure

There's no difference in engine heights, or hood clearances. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps there is a spacer issue. (engine mounts????)

I tried to resolve the height issue for you. Al's '57 has its original engine and there's no space for a finger above the cap.

My car has a '57 engine but all the ancillaries are '56, so I'm not sure if I have an -A or -C manifold.

Could someone take a photo of their '56 filter cap relative to the bottom of the intake manifold?

Here is a photo of my 1494's Valley Cap. The gap between the top of the cap and the bottom of the intake manifold is approximately 13//16"

I have both the 9424-A and the 9424-C intake maifold, and they appear to be the exact same dimensions. The only difference is the size of the hole for the Temperature Sensor (1/4" vs 3/8")
The parts manual says that 9424-A was used 1n 1956 and that 9424-C was used in 1956/1957.
Obviously, 9424-A was only used with the Holly Carburetors. However, 9424-C could have been used with both Holly and Carter. One could assume that the change to the 9424-C intake manifold was concurrent with the change to Carter, but I have seen no proof of that.

I have made the same assumption.
It turns out my friend’s clearance problem was from it having 2 3/8” thick carb spacer to help with vapor lock, which is actually a fuel pump problem.

That's a really thick spacer, no wonder the hood cannot be closed! If you are looking at the section drawing showing the engine and hood, the distance is minimal.

(2) 3/8" Spacers.
On the ventilator. I think the intake size may have had to increase with the compression ratio of the '57. The smaller inlet and horse hair packing may have negatively affected the draft tube's ability to pull sufficient acidic fumes from the crankcase, spoiling the oil.
